Why Losing Streaks Hurt More Than Just the Account

Nick gets honest when asked how it feels to be in a losing streak: “Made me feel dumb.” It’s a sentiment many traders share. Suddenly, your once reliable strategy seems broken. You question your skills, your setups, your psychology. “Is my system really working? What am I doing wrong?”

Reah adds her own experience: being stuck in a plateau. Not a catastrophic drawdown, but a mental grind. “It wasn’t that I was having a losing streak… but I was stuck in that kind of rut.” It’s a silent struggle where wins and losses even out, leaving no progress and plenty of frustration.

How to Rebuild Trust in Yourself and Your System

So how do you recover from a losing streak, or worse, a mindset rut?

Nick offers this first step: “Backtesting… can help you rebuild trust in your system.” When you know from historical data that your strategy has survived past losing streaks, it gives you the mental resilience to push through the current one. Seeing those stats, your average drawdown, max consecutive losses, can provide clarity and confidence.

Reah complements this with a reminder to evaluate your own style. “Is holding trades for a long time a good thing for me?” Sometimes, small tweaks like taking profits earlier or narrowing your focus to one or two currency pairs can make all the difference.

And when you’re stuck? Ask for help. “Sometimes getting a second pair of eyes… can make all the world of a difference.”

Both hosts emphasize the power of simplicity. Nick warns against relying on 10 different indicators: “Are you waiting for all the stars to align or something?” Instead, he recommends trimming down to one or two tools that truly serve your strategy.

Reah shares her love for RSI, especially for identifying reversal opportunities: “The RSI is an excellent tool for getting an idea of when momentum is slowing down,” but she’s quick to note, it’s not about finding the perfect tool; it’s about finding your tool.

Nick echoes this with a quote from legendary trader Jack Schwager: “A trader must always find their path, not the path.”

Give Yourself Grace

One of the most powerful parts of the conversation is Reah’s encouragement for traders who feel like giving up:

“You have to give yourself some grace and some time to learn who you are as a trader… Just because Joe is finding success in 6 months doesn’t mean you will. Your success might take 6 years.”

Nick reinforces that even seasoned traders face losing streaks. The key is knowing your system works, and sticking with it. “Don’t allow the losing streak to deter you from what does work for you.”

Trading isn’t easy. It’s not supposed to be. As Reah says: “Your biggest enemy in your trading is always going to be you.”
